Historical Preservation

Ephrata Cloister - Ephrata, Pennsylvania (PA)

Original work for the cloister project involved historical research to survey and document all buildings within the cloister complex and initiate a program for restoration. A master plan was created and a program of development for restoration of the Saal, Saaron and lesser buildings was implemented.

Haines Mill - Cetronia, Pennsylvania (PA)

Haines Mill represents a unique part of our American heritage as an 18th c. grinding mill, using water as the source of power for the grinding process. This mill was a fully functioning and privately operated facility supporting the rural population in this area of Lehigh County, PA. The two-part design and restoration of the mill was to ensure that the building was authentic and the structure was physically and architecturally preserved. Initially, we completed the exterior restoration of the historic shell of the mill and preservation of the stream and ground area. Second, we ensured the grinding and internal mill was operational and represented an authentic part of the industrial complex. The facility is owned and maintained by Lehigh County as a historic site and is used extensively as an educational and historic resource.

Lock Ridge Park and Furnace - Alburtis, Pennsylvania (PA)

For years, the Lockridge Iron Company was one of the foremost examples of powerful blowing engines for furnaces and the sole industry of Alburtis. This project involved the two-phase development of a county park on a historic tract of land in Alburtis totaling 20.1 acres where the original iron company was in operation from 1866 to 1924. The first phase included restoration of the furnace and industrial warehouse buildings and the second phase was development of the park area. Design work included the development of a new park and recreation areas, reforestation, preservation and stabilization of a small trout stream and restoration of the original furnace and out building as a museum with historical representation of the construction and nature of the 19th century Pennsylvania iron-making and industrial complex. Architectural and historical research associated with a local iron & foundry furnace was conducted leading to pre- and post-civil war preservation of major historical components and its re-use as a county historical and recreational site.
